Thetoppriorityforthecollege’s1,200staff isalwaysdeliveringthebestqualitylessons. Lecturerswanttoreducein-classadministra- tionandmaximizeteachingtimewhilegiving themselvesandtheirstudentsimmediate accesstoalltheeducationalcontentand programstheyneed.Manyteachersused tabletdevicestohelpthemdothis,butthe varietyofmodelsusedraisedcomplications forboththestaffthemselvesandtheIT teamsupportingthem. Itwasalsoacomplexprocessgettingnew usersordeviceslinkeduptoournetwork andsystems.” Ryanandhisteamstartedtoconsiderpro- vidingthecollege’s600teachingstaffwith tabletsthatmetthenecessarytechnical requirements.InadditiontomakingtheIT supportteam’slifeeasier,theaimwastoen- hancetheuserexperienceforthelecturers themselves. “Ourstaffwanttoworkaseffectivelyaspos- sible,andtodeliverthehighest-qualityles- sonsandlectures,”explainsRyan.“Butthey oftenstruggledwithnothavingthemost appropriatetechnologyathand.”Asanex- ample,heexplainsthatthecollege’sregis- trationsystemiskeptonitscentralinternal system,andstaffneedacomputingdevice toaccessit.Inmanyteachingenvironments, suchasdancestudios,itisnotpossibleto haveadesktopPCintheroom,soteachers wouldhavetonoteattendancebyhandand thenupdatethesystemlater–atime-con- sumingandinconvenientsolution. Eveninmoretraditionalclassroomenviron- ments,relyingonastaticdesktopPCcould createabarrierbetweenteacherandstu- dents,sincetheteacherneededtostayat thefrontoftheclasstodeliverapresenta- tionandcouldnotinteractdirectlywithindi- viduallearners.Teacherswhotriedtosolve theproblembybringingintabletdevicesoften foundthemodeltheyusedwouldnotrun coreapplicationslikeMicrosoftExcel*and MicrosoftPowerPoint*andsotheycouldnot editthedocumentstheyusedmostfrequently. “Weneededtoaddressalltheseuserexpe- rienceissuesaswellasourowntechnologi- calconcerns,”saysRyan.“Sincewewere planningtoinvestinalargefleetoftablets, weneededtomakesurewegotthebest possiblevaluefromthenewtechnology.” Ano-brainer KnowingthatonlyaMicrosoftWindows- baseddevicewouldmeeteveryone’sneeds, thecollegechosetopurchase600Lenovo Tablet2devices,poweredbytheIntelAtom processorandrunningMicrosoftWindows 8Pro.“Windows8Progivesusabetterlevel ofencryptionaswellastheabilitytoadd newdevicestothedomainandapplygroup policyverysimply,”explainsRyan.“It’sacom- pellingcorporatesolution,sinceitenables networklog-on,itconnectseasilytoother hardwarethroughitsUSBandHDMIports, anditrunstheMicrosoftOffice*applications thatourstaffarefamiliarwithandrelyon, likeMicrosoftOutlook*andMicrosoftLync*.” Hecontinues:“CombiningWindows8with theIntelAtomprocessorwasano-brainerfor us.Intel®technologygivesthegreatperform- ancethatweneedtorunourMicrosoftap- plications,nomatterwhatthedevice.Sure enough,thetabletsdidn’tdisappointinterms ofcomputingperformance.” Thesolutionwasimplementedwithsupport fromlocalITsolutionproviderGardnerSys- tems,whichassistedwiththehardware selectionandroll-out,andbySoftcat,which suppliedthetabletsthemselves. Sharingteachinginnovations Followingdistributionofthenewdevices, thecollegesetupanongoingtraininginitia- tivecalledLunchbytestoinspireteachers tomakethemostoftheirnewresources. InternalexpertsworkwiththeITteamto developcontentforthesesessions,which helpsharebestpracticesandideasforusing thetabletsfromaroundthecollege.“This knowledgesharingisessentialinencourag- ingadoptionamongallteachersandlectur- ers,”commentsRyan.“Someareinevitably morecomfortablewithnewtechnologies thanothers,andweneedtomakesurewe’re helpingeveryonegetthemostvaluefrom thedevices.Atthesametime,manystaff membersarefindingwaystousethetablets thatwe’dnotthoughtofbefore,soweneed aplatformforthemtotellothersandshare thebenefit.” Makingmoretimeforstudents Inthefewmonthsthetabletshavebeenin use,theyhavealreadymadeasignificant impactonteachersandtheirstudents.“One ofthefirstusecaseswehadinmindwas updatingtheregisteratthebeginningof eachclass,”recallsRyan.“Indeed,we’veseen asignificantincreaseinregistrationtracking ratesinourcentraldatabaseasstaffcan nowupdateitinrealtime,andthebarrier ofhavingtoremembertogoanddoitin thestaffroomlaterhasbeenremoved.It’s savedthemalotoftimethattheycannow spendonworkingwithstudentsand preparingevenbetterlessons.” Documenteditingisnowmuchsimpler,since lecturerscanupdatetheirpresentationson theirtablets.Thishasworkedsowellthat asanextstep,thecollegeisconsideringre- movingallteacherdesktopPCsfromitsclass- rooms,replacingthemwithatabletdocking stationandanHDMIcabletoconnecttheir tabletsdirectlytoelectronicwhiteboards. selvesback,butwebelieveitwilldrivean improvementingradesaswell.” Hegoesontoexplainthatitisnotunusual forveryknowledgeablestudentstostruggle inwrittenexaminations.“Theyknowthe information,butfinditeasiertodeliverit verballythroughpresentationsanddiscus- sion,”hecontinues.“Byhavingvideoevidence oftheirknowledgewhichwecansubmit alongsidewrittenwork,theyhavethechance togetahighergrade.Somestudentswho weregoingtofailwillpass.” Interactingwithstudents,allday long Besidesthesespecificexamples,lecturers acrossthecollegeareseeinganimprovement inthequalityofteachingthattheycande- liverwiththeInteltechnology-powered devices.Withtabletinhand,theycanmove aroundtheclassroomandinteractdirectly withstudentswhilestillcontrollingtheir presentation.Theycanevengivethetablet toastudentandletthemtakecontrolofcer- tainaspectsoftheclass,ensuringtheyremain engagedandmotivatedandprovidingamore directandpersonalizedlearningexperience. Advancedbatterylifemeanslecturers’ tabletscanstanduptoalongday intheclassroom Filmingassessmentsforstronger results Meanwhile,oneofthemoreinnovativelec- turersatthecollegehasalreadycomeup withanentirelyunexpectedusagemodel, whichheexpectstohaveaverypositive resultforhisstudents.JohnBainbridge,who teachesintheBusinessStudiesDepartment, hadbeenlookingintowaystorecordvideos ofstudentpresentations. “Weinitiallythoughtaboutobtainingsome videorecorders,”Bainbridgerecalls,“butthen alightcameonandwerealizedwecould usethetablets.Wehaditallsetupinjust acoupleofdays,andwenowhave70very happystudents.Notonlyhasitinspiredthem toimprovebybeingabletowatchthem- The registration tracking application is accessed through tablets in class Thedeviceshavealsocontributedtowards buildingastrongerrapportbetweenstudents andteachersinmanycases.“Alotofour studentshavetheirownmobiledevices,and theyusetheminlessonsandforhomework,” saysRyan.“Whentheyseetheirlecturers usingsimilartechnology,itmakesiteasier forthemtoidentifywithwhatthey’rebeing shown.Itkeepseveryoneonthesamewave- length.” Ofcourse,Ryanandhisteamarealsoen- joyinghavingthenewtabletfleetinplace. “We’reverypleasedwiththespecsofthe tabletswe’vechosen,”hereflects.“Besides thestrongperformanceandthecompelling touchscreenfunctionality,it’sgreathaving aUSBandHDMIportonthedevicessothey canbeeasilyconnectedtokeyboards,pro- jectorsandotheraccessories.Thebattery lifeisalsofantastic.Evenwithheavyuse, thetabletslastallday,whichisimportant whenyouneedthemineveryclassandyou wanttobefreefromwiresandcables,in- cludingthecharger.SomedevicesI’veseen havenomorethanoneandahalfhoursof batterylifeandthatwouldbenogoodtous.” Makingthemostofresources Thesuccessofthetabletdeploymentatthe CityofLiverpoolCollegehasinspiredRyan toconsiderfurtherusesforthedevices.In additiontoreplacingstaffPCsacrossthe organizationwithtablets,heisalsoconsid- eringthepossibilityoffurtherreducinghis hardwarecostsovertimebymakingmore useofMicrosoftLync.“Everyonewithatablet hasthisapplicationinstalledonit,”Ryanex- plains.“SoI’mconsideringdispensingwith stafftelephonesandjusthavingeveryone usetheirtabletstomakecallsaswell.We’ve pilotedthisapproachanditseemslikeaviable option.Lyncoffersawiderangeofcollabo- rativetools–frominstantmessagingtoin- classpolling–sowecanofferstaffasuite oftoolsthroughasingleapplicationaswell ashelpingthemworkmoreefficientlybybeing abletoseeifthepersonthey’retryingto contactisavailablebeforecallingthem.” Heconcludes:“Theworkwe’vedonewith IntelandMicrosoftsofarisreallyexciting, andIbelieveit’shelpedpositionusasoneof theUK’smostinnovativeusersofITined- ucation.Welookforwardtobenefittingfur- therfromtheirexpertiseandtechnologyin thenextphaseinourmobilecomputingjour- ney,andhelpingourcollegecommunityboth teachandlearnmoreeffectivelythrough theirtablets.” Lessonslearned Theintroductionofinnovativetechnology canbehugelyexciting,andbringswith itnumerousopportunities.However,itis essentialtoensurethatthetechnology iswellmatchedtouserneeds,andthat thetargetusersunderstandhowbest tomakeuseofit.TheCityofLiverpool Collegeapproachedthischallengecare- fully,notonlyensuringthatitworked withleadingtechnologyprovidersto crafttherightsolution,butalsorunning dedicatedtrainingtodevelopitsstaff’s ITskillsonanongoingbasis.
