Intel® IOT Gateways: Enabling and Configuring Watchdog Timer: Application Note

A watchdog timer is a hardware-monitoring tool that prompts system recovery after a failure, with a simple pinging mechanism. When the watchdog timer is not pinged after a certain amount of time, it saves system information to aid with debugging and then attempts to correct the problem by rebooting the system. The watchdog timer can help with recovery from problems including but not limited to: Pr...oblems with operating system task scheduling; Deadlocks from faulty interrupt handling; Faulty interrupt disabling or masking; Incorrect hardware configurations or hardware errors; General software failure. Without a watchdog timer, undetected systemn malfunctions in IoT gateways could result in the loss of an entire system, expensive damages, and/or high recovery costs. (v.2, Aug. 2015)
