Why are some of my wildcard assignments ignored by the Quartus II software?

Description

Different versions of the Quartus® II software support different types of wildcard assignments.

In the Assignment Editor, assignments that support wildcards include the following text in their name: "(Accepts wildcards)" in version 5.0 or "(Accepts wildcards/groups)" in version 5.1 and above.

You can also refer to the Quartus II Settings File Reference Manual (PDF) to find out if a Quartus II Settings File (.qsf) assignment supports wildcards.

In the Quartus II software version 4.2, only timing assignments support wildcards. For example, in the Quartus II software version 4.2, wildcards are not honored when making the max_fanout assignment for registers. If there are specific registers that all begin with text such as reg_fast_ or end with _mem_reg, values such as reg_fast_* or *_mem_reg are ignored. You can make the Maximum Fanout assignment for a hierarchical entity to make the assignment for all registers in the hierarchy.
