Simulation Hangs During Boot Copy Due to Code Overrun

Environment

  • Simulation

    Critical Issue

    Description

You can simulate the Nios II processor with ModelSim, and boot up your system in simulation. For MAX 10 systems, the Nios II software build tools can allow boot code to overflow the usable regions of simulated flash memory. If this happens, when you boot from MAX 10 on-chip flash memory in simulation, the boot copier hangs.

This problem arises because the Altera On-Chip Flash IP Core provides incorrect information about which regions in the memory address space can be used as flash memory.

    Resolution

Manually verify that your boot code fits in usable regions of the MAX 10 on-chip flash memory. Use standard code-size reduction techniques to ensure that the code fits.

Alternatively, upgrade to the Nios II EDS v14.0.1 or later.
